Speech by BCA Chief Executive Jennifer Westacott to the Cranlana Programme ‘Good Society’ Speech Series

The‘Good Society’ speech series is conducted by the Cranlana Programme, an independent organisation whose broad objective is to cultivate wisdom in leadership.

In the speech, titled ‘Growth to What End? Changing the Australian Mindset’, BCA Chief Executive Jennifer Westacott explored the links between well-managed growth, growing prosperity and a good society.

In the speech she canvassed four broad areas.

First, she described what she believes a good society looks like.

Second, she made the case that prosperity is an essential element of a good society and that economic growth is essential to achieving enduring prosperity.

She then outlined an approach for achieving well-managed growth that delivers on the good society vision.

Finally, she detailed three ethical anchor points for the thesis that growth is vital to a good society: equality of opportunity; freedom of choice; and fairness.
