Submission to the Inquiry into Shareholder Engagement and Participation

19 March 2008

This submission argues that the Australian corporate governance environment is overregulated, which creates major impediments to effective shareholder engagement.

An effective corporate governance environment must give companies the flexibility to adapt their methods of engagement according to individual circumstances and the needs of their shareholders.

The submission argues that, instead of additional regulation being imposed in the corporate governance area, more effort should be made to review and streamline existing regulations to reduce the regulatory burden and improve the ability of companies to engage with their shareholders.
