Business supports accelerated transition to new building code

09 February 2017

"We firmly support the Turnbull government's move to bring forward the transition to the new Building Code," Business Council chief executive Jennifer Westacott said today.

"We have long supported the reinstatement of the ABCC and this change will accelerate efforts to increase the competitiveness of Australia's construction industry and end the systemic corruption and unlawful conduct identified by four royal commissions over 40 years.

“The Code is critical to ensuring that essential public infrastructure like schools, hospitals and roads are delivered affordably for taxpayers.

"The construction sector is the third biggest employer in our economy. Its success is vital to building and sustaining Australia's economic growth and prosperity.

"For these reasons, we urge all members of parliament to support the Building and Construction Industry (Improving Productivity) Amendment Bill 2017.

“It will also be important that all parties work together to ensure a smooth transition to the new code within the accelerated timeline,” Ms Westacott said.
