About

What are the awards about?

The Biggies will recognise the positive contribution that big businesses make to communities across the country. This is the first time the Business Council of Australia has run the Biggies.

The Biggies will celebrate the best of the people - and the businesses they are a part of - who have gone above and beyond.

When are winners announced and awarded?

We will announce the winners of the Biggies at the rescheduled Business Council annual dinner in April 2021.

What are the categories?

  • The Big Heart Award – to recognise an individual or a team that has gone to extraordinary lengths to help those in need, often while facing their own challenges.
  • The Big Impact Award – to recognise one company’s outstanding efforts over the last 12 months.

Who decides the winners?

The Biggies has appointed a panel of eminent Australians to judge the awards:

  • David Gonski AC (Chair)
  • The Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO
  • General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK CVO MC (Retd)
  • Christopher Dore, Editor-in-Chief, The Australian (media partner)
  • Shane Fitzsimmons, Commissioner for Resilience NSW
  • Lorena Granados from Roman Leathergoods, Mogo (community representative)
  • Suzie Riddell, CEO of Social Ventures Australia

What will the panel consider?

In making their decision the judging panel will assess entries against the following criteria:

Big Heart Award

In this category the judging panel will be looking for entries that demonstrate how they:

  • have gone above and beyond to serve their community
  • have given back to the community (supported by their employer)
  • have delivered an incredible response to a major event or need, and
  • are of outstanding character and acted with integrity.

Big Impact Award

In this category the judging panel will be looking for entries that demonstrate:

  • you have had a significant impact in the community
  • your primary purpose was to benefit others
  • how you have gone above and beyond in responding to a major event or need, and
  • the commitment to your company’s values and reputation.

How will the entries be used?

Our media partner for the awards, The Australian, will promote the Biggies in its news pages, online, in and on Sky News, and across the News Corp network.

Additionally, the paper will produce a special edition of the The Deal magazine to showcase all shortlisted entrants.

Entry details

Who can enter?

There’s one simple rule if you want to enter the Biggies, your company needs to be a member of the Business Council of Australia.

Why you should enter?

It’s time for some good stories.

The Biggies gives us a platform to bring to life the best of the people that make up business. It’s our opportunity to demonstrate pride in our organisations. If we don’t celebrate the positive impact of business in the community no one else will do it for us.

Your entries will tell the stories, the Biggies will help us give them nation-wide recognition.

Can I nominate my company for the Big Impact Award?

Yes, as long as the company is a member of the BCA. We want to hear from our members about what they are most proud of, and how they have helped communities most in need over the last year.

Can I nominate other companies for the Big Impact Award?

You can certainly encourage other BCA members to enter, CEOs must enter and endorse their projects.

Is there a certain time period the judges will be looking at?

Biggies entries should relate to recent projects, with positive benefits achieved within the previous year.

What if my project commenced before 2019?

The judging panel will use its discretion to assess projects, entries need to demonstrate there has been a positive community benefit in the last year, even if the project started earlier.

My project is ongoing, can I still apply?

Yes, your entry will need to demonstrate a positive impact, and this can be ongoing.

Terms and conditions

What to expect

If your company is shortlisted for the awards, your CEO and others important to your company will need to be available to attend the award ceremony in Sydney in April 2021.

There’ll be some media requirements like interviews, and your entry will be provided to our media partner, The Australian. Your entry should be written with a view to being made public.

Our media partner, The Australian, is promoting the Biggies in its news pages, online, in the Deal magazine and on Sky News. This will ensure we can publicise the positive contribution that business, and their people, make in the community.

Your entry submission will be shared with the editorial team at The Australian. They will also need to talk to you and/or your team, take photos and possibly visit premises to ensure they capture the story for publication. We’ll need your help to ensure The Australian gets what they need to tell your story effectively and promote the positives of the broader business community.

We’ll also need your help to publicise the awards to ensure people hear about the efforts of your company. We’ll need you to share, like and promote social media content on your channels so we can reach a broad an audience as possible.
