This is the Business Council’s submission to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) report on general online retail marketplaces.

Online marketplaces have become an increasingly important part of Australians’ lives, and have spurred greater competition and more transparent prices for consumers.

Online marketplaces operate within a wider retail environment and are subject to existing laws and regulations. The imposition of specific requirements on online retail marketplaces will create market distortions.

To ensure the final report is comprehensive and balanced, the ACCC should consider whether existing laws can respond adequately to any real or perceived market failures as well as the wider benefits that online marketplaces create.
