Submission to the Independent Review of the Australian Government’s Regulatory Impact Analysis Process

12 November 2012

Australia currently ranks 96th out of 144 nations for regulatory burden on the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index, which means there are considerable gains to be made from institutionalising more disciplined regulatory gatekeeping.

This submission supports a strong and swift response to the review and the implementation of as many of its recommendations as possible.

The submission strongly supports recommendations for:

  • earlier consultation and analysis on the impact of regulatory proposals
  • narrowing the allowable exemptions from undertaking proper analysis before introducing new regulation
  • undertaking more disciplined regular reviews of existing regulation.
