Submission to the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism on the Energy White Paper

14 July 2009

The energy white paper is a perfectly timed opportunity for the federal government to ensure that Australia’s energy policies support the growth of the economy in the period to 2030 and beyond.

Australia needs energy policies that will help support the transition to lower carbon at lowest cost to the economy while maintaining competitive trade and investment advantages in the energy sector.

We need regulation and market structures that will facilitate investment and innovation in the supply of energy and which are open to all possible technology options.

The government’s energy white paper will be most successful if it establishes a vision for the economy and the role of the energy sector that:

  • Ensures Australia is consistently ranked in the top five economies in the OECD.
  • Uses scenario analysis to take into account all possible economic, policy and technological outcomes.
  • Outlines strategic policy directions to support the achievement of the vision for the economy in 2030.
