Submission on the interim report of the Australian Consumer Law Review
15 December 2016
The Business Council's submission on the Interim Report of the Australian Consumer Law review recognises the importance of an effective consumer protection law but cautions against new regulatory interventions being floated in the report that are not supported by a clear case for change.
Wherever possible, the review should put make recommendations that maintain strong consumer protection but reduce the ever-growing regulatory burden on Australian businesses and lift business competitiveness, because this is ultimately in the best interests of consumers.
This should include providing guidance to address a lack of clarity around parts of the law (e.g. consumer guarantees) and improving the efficiency of reporting requirements.
