Statement on the Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

27 June 2015

“The final report of the Joint Select Committee on Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples released yesterday provides a sound roadmap for progress towards a referendum,” Business Council of Australia Chief Executive Jennifer Westacott said.

“The report recommends a process for whole of community engagement and debate, and a clear set of options to be discussed.

“The substance of the committee’s position aligns with BCA principles of fairness, shared prosperity and the need for social and economic conditions that support all Australians to realise their potential.

“The experiences of BCA member companies show recognition and respect are fundamental to improving material outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“I commend the committee for their considered and inclusive consultation process, and providing substantive options for community discussion,” Ms Westacott said.
