More than a decade of ad hoc and unstable energy and climate policy has left Australia on the back foot when it comes to reaching a net zero target by 2050 or delivering more affordable, secure and reliable energy.
Our 2021 Achieving a net zero economy report outlined a 7-point climate policy architecture, central to which is an enhanced the Safeguard Mechanism supported by a credible offset market.
Australia’s chance to secure this stronger future is at risk of being stymied by ideological feuding and political point scoring. Failure on the Safeguard Mechanism could leave us with either an unworkable scheme or without a plan at all.
