03 December 2009

November 2009

The BCA has made a submission to the Minister for Health, the Honourable Nicola Roxon, on the merits of establishing an independent national health commission.

The submission expands on a specific health governance recommendation contained in the BCA paper, Fit for the Job.

Among other recommendations, Fit for the Job called for:

  • The development of a national and comprehensive health strategy that addresses the current and emerging pattern of disease and the determinants of that pattern of disease.
  • The establishment of an independent national health commission to develop, lead and account for that strategy.
  • The establishment of national, patient-based information systems.

In December 2009 BCA Chief Executive Katie Lahey wrote to Health Minister Nicola Roxon regarding supervision and governance of the health sector, including a recommendation for a supervisory commission for health.
