Business Council supports administration as first step towards cleaning up the CFMEU

23 August 2024

The Business Council welcomes the decision to place the Construction and General Division of the CFMEU into administration.

This is a positive first step at quashing the systemic culture of alleged criminal conduct and unlawful industrial behaviour in the union that is making worksites less productive.

The BCA acknowledges the bipartisan support, and the inclusion of key amendments for which the BCA has advocated, that will increase the transparency and accountability of the administration process.

The BCA continues to call for a Royal Commission to fully investigate the matter, and for the introduction of an industry specific regulator.

BCA Chief Executive Bran Black said placing the union into administration will deliver action to help fix the internal culture of the CFMEU.

“The BCA supports the swift determination of the scheme of administration,” Mr Black said.

“Administration is a good first step for addressing the allegations of corruption and criminality in the CFMEU, but more action is needed to give confidence the union will act within the law in future,” Mr Black said.

“The allegations of criminal, corrupt and coercive conduct are clearly deep and systemic and are the reason why a Royal Commission is required.

“Part of the full solution must entail establishing an industry-specific regulator that can keep the union in check, including - and especially - after the administration process is complete.
