Better R&D to deliver jobs for NSW

05 February 2021

Australia’s biggest employers have welcomed the NSW Government’s plan to turn ideas into jobs, following a high-level briefing from the Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier Gabrielle Upton.

“A better research and development system will be critical to boosting investment and creating jobs as we recover from the pandemic”, Business Council chief executive Jennifer Westacott said.

“As the Prime Minster has said, getting this right should be a national priority - NSW has now delivered a framework to help do it. Every state leader should be watching because NSW continues to set the standard for a strong business-led recovery.

“Throughout the pandemic, cooperation across the community saved thousands of jobs. Why wouldn’t we keep working together to boost job creation by getting new and innovative products and ideas to market?

“Getting our R&D system right is critical because innovation and investment equals jobs. Making Australia a more competitive place to do business is critical to locking in a job fuelled recovery.

“Large employers already invest and employ millions of Australians and our research institutions are world class, by bringing them together we can create even more new jobs.

“We welcome the five priority actions identified in this plan, in particular turbocharging the precinct model that is already attracting global investment will be critical.

“We look forward to working with Gabrielle Upton and the state government to get the implementation of this plan right so we can create the new jobs and opportunities Australians want.”
