Submission to the Attorney-General’s Department on the Consolidation of Commonwealth Anti-Discrimination Laws
The Business Council of Australia strongly supports a more inclusive, non-discriminatory society.
But we need a simpler system of anti-discrimination laws to provide the community with better access to a more consistent set of laws, and to reduce the compliance burden for business.
There are no fewer than 12 separate pieces of Commonwealth and state legislation – all addressed to the same objective.
The BCA is calling for one Anti-Discrimination Act with which everyone across Australia should comply.
In achieving a single, unified Act, the government should look to maintain the standards in the existing legislation, which provide adequate protections for the community.
This submission, to the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department, also makes a number of comments about suggested approaches canvassed in the Attorney-General’s discussion paper.
