Tax Nation: Reform of Tax System Overdue

The ongoing campaign by the Business Coalition for Tax Reform is discussed in an article titled ‘Business Calls for Tax Relief from States’ by Annabel Hepworth and Tracy Ong, The Australian Financial Review, 7 April 2008. In the article, BCA President Greig Gailey comments on the illogical nature of current tax arrangements.

‘Business Council of Australia president Greig Gailey said: “Why do we have different rates of stamp duty in [different] states? Why do we have stamp duty on some things in some states and not others? That begins to produce distortions. People do things, spend money to design things in a way that minimises tax … that’s kind of ridiculous.”’
