Climate Change and Emissions Reduction

18 April 2007: Coverage of the BCA’s position on emissions reduction in The Australian.

While declaring “we all want to see action'”, the business council president said no quick fix existed and a long-term strategy was needed that included emissions trading, research and development, improved energy efficiency and long-term adaptation. “Emissions trading will require clear targets for Australia's total emissions and the trading of emissions permits,” he said. “These targets will need to be set in light of thorough economic evaluation of what is possible.” Mr Chaney said business would ultimately accept whatever decision was made “as long as there is not a differential to disadvantage an Australian industry over an industry in other parts of the world”.
