Global Engagement

Global Engagement

The BCA’s policy research and advocacy on global engagement is led by its Global Engagement Task Force, which is chaired by John W.H. Denton, Partner and Chief Executive Officer of Corrs Chambers Westgarth.

The BCA advocates policies that promote free trade, and is committed to resisting protectionism.

The opening of global markets has given Australian businesses many new opportunities to engage with the rest of the world.

But we need to ensure we do not take today’s economic openness for granted. Australian businesses need to continue to take up new opportunities if they are to maintain and build their competitiveness in global markets.

These new opportunities include the development and expansion of export markets, the global sourcing of imports, and establishing or growing business operations overseas.

While significant progress has been made, enterprises in all key sectors of the Australian economy continue to face barriers to engaging in overseas markets.

Businesses also need both the capabilities and opportunities to become globally engaged or to build on their presence in existing international markets. We need polices that:

  • Achieve further liberalisation of trade and investment barriers.
  • Encourage greater global economic integration through policies that promote mobility and make it faster, easier and less costly to do business across international borders.
  • Increase Australia’s global engagement capabilities, especially the knowledge and skills of our people.
  • Strengthen the effectiveness of our diplomacy through greater collaboration between government and the private sector.
